Activity

What is it?
Type of Activity:  Partner
Materials Needed:  Paper, crayons, markers, vocabulary cards of classroom objects, list of prepositions for student reference: on, next to, in front of, behind, on the left, on the right, above, below
Directions for student:
At your desk, draw a picture of the perfect classroom.  What would you find in it?  Label all the things in your picture.  Do not show your partner!

Next, tell your partner about your classroom.  What are the things in the room?  Where are the things?  (There are 20 desks.  There is a computer next to the door.  There is a whiteboard on the wall.  Your partner must draw what you say without looking and you can’t help!

Now, look at the two pictures.  Are they the same?  Switch jobs.
Assessment:   Teacher observation, based on the quality of sentences produced.

Grammar Explanation

There is/are (dummy referential subjects) are deceptively simple in English.  In other languages the function that indicates existence takes on very different forms (this particular structure has been the topic of very intense and very abstract debates in the field of theoretical linguistics).
Often it is helpful to show the students a chart of the conjugations:

singular plural
There is There are
Note that this there is not the same as:
The pencils are in there.

Negation is straightforward:
There isn't a pencil in my bag.
There aren't three books on the desk.
Note:  In general, some is used in positive sentences while any is used in negative sentences and questions, but there are cases where the reverse is acceptable. Questions
Yes/No questions
These are formed by putting the auxiliary verb at the beginning of the sentence.
Is there an eraser on my desk?
Are there any books under the table?
Of course the same effect can be achieved by giving the sentence a rising intonation:
There is a chair on the desk?
