Activity
What was I doing?
Type of Activity: Independent
Materials Needed: Cassette tape and recorder, copy of recess time schedule for student reference
Directions for student:
On a tape, tell your teacher what you did during your recesses this past week, and include the time. For example: At 10:00 on Monday I was playing soccer. Then ask your teacher some yes/no questions about what he/she did at certain times as well. For example: Were you watching students at 10:00 on Monday?
Assessment: Teacher observation, based on the quality of sentences produced.
A Busy Week!
Type of Activity: Partner
Materials Needed: Blank grids listing the days of the week with time slots for each day.
Directions for student:
With a partner, play a game where each player tries to guess the other's last week schedule. Take two blank grids from your teacher. At your desks, fill in the blanks of one grid with the activities you were doing. Leave the other grid blank. Do not use the same activity more than twice (If you were at school during most of the times, think of the many, many different things you probably did.) Don’t let your partner see your grid!
Next, take turns asking yes/no questions to your partner about their schedule (Were you ____ing at (time) on __day?). When you guess correctly, fill in the blank grid with your partner’s activity. This way, you can keep track of your partner’s activities. If you don’t guess correctly, you lose your turn. If you are stuck on a blank, after three tries your partner can give you a hint. The first one to guess the other's complete schedule wins.
Assessment: Teacher observation, based on the quality of sentences produced.
Grammar Explanation
Past Continuous is used in English to show that you were in the middle of doing something at the given moment – the action had already started and it had not finished at that instant. Form it with the verb To Be in the past tense followed by another verb in its -ing form. Be careful with verbs that “drop the silent e” or “double a letter” before adding the -ing ending!
| singular | plural | |
| first person | I was jumping | we were cooking |
| second person | you were reading | you were riding |
| third person | he was she was hiding it was | they were hopping |
I was working on my project at 3:00. (Meaning, I was in the middle of working on my project at 3:00. I had already started and had not finished.)
He was painting when the telephone rang . (Meaning, He was in the middle of painting when the telephone rang. He had already started and had not finished.)
Negatives and questions are formed just like in the present continuous.
