Daily Grammar Sentences
Instructions:  Give the student the sentences in the second column (Sentences to be Corrected).  Students write corrected sentences and turn them in to the teacher to be checked.

Assessment can be made on three levels in Daily Grammar Sentences:
        1. Did the student recognize the mistake?
        2. Can they fix it?
        3. Can they produce a sentence using that grammar point in free speech?



Activity

As a Child…
Type of Activity:  Independent
Materials Needed:  Cassette tape and recorder, copy of recess time schedule for student reference
Directions for student:

Make a tape describing yourself (or a family member) when you were younger.  Tell ten things that you could and could not do: I couldn't read.  I could color very well.  Then, tell how each of these things has changed or stayed the same:  I can read now and I can still color very well.

Assessment:   Through teacher observation, based on the quality of sentences produced.

Grammar Explanation
Could is simply the past tense of can.  It expresses something you were able to do in the past.  Like with can, the third person singular form does not change.
In negatives and questions, the auxiliary could replaces the auxiliary did. 

I did not go.   changes to:    I could not go. 
Did they go?   changes to:
