CONDITIONAL SENTENCE

1. I. Future Conditional Sentence [ Type -1]

PATTERN: If (Present Tense)     , (Future Tense)
Examples: a. We will go for a swim if the weather is fine.
[it means: we may go for a swim; the weather may be fine]
b. If Susi invites me., I will attend the party next Sunday.
[There is possibility for m to attend the party]

1. Present Conditional Sentence [ Type —2 ]

PATTERN:      If (Past Tense) , (Past Future Tense )
Examples: a. I would give her the money if she were poor.
[It means: I do not give her the money because she is rich]
b. You could not go to her house if you did not know her address.
[= You can go to her house because you know her address]

1. Past Conditional Sentence. [Type —3 ]

PATTERN: If (Past Perfect Tense) , ( Past Future Perfect Tense)
Examples: a. They could have gone for a swim if the weather had been fine.
[It means that they could not go for swim since the weather bad]
b. If he had stayed longer, he would have met Desy.
[It means: he did not stay longer that is why he did not meet Desy]
INVERSION
If the conditional sentences contain ‘were’, ‘had’ or ‘should’, we can leave out the ‘if’ by reversing the position of the verb and the subject:
-         If you should see pears at the market, do buy some for me.
= Should you see pears at the market, do buy some for me. (Likely type)
-         If it were not for the helmet, more motorcyclists would be killed.
=Were it not for the helmet, more motorcyclists would be killed. (unlikely type)
-         If you had come earlier, we would have gone to the show together.
= Had you come earlier, we would have gone to the show together. (impossible type)
