Activity

An Author’s Future
Type of Activity:  Independent
Materials Needed:  Cassette tape and recorder
Directions for student:

Imagine you are a famous author.  Think about what you will do to create your next story.  What will you do to get ideas?  What will you do to write it?  What will you do to publish it?  What are you going to do when it is finished?
Make a tape that tells your plans.  What are you going to do first?  Then what?

Assessment:   Through teacher observation, based on the quality of sentences produced.

Grammar Explanation
With going to, be is added as an auxiliary so make sure it is conjugated correctly:

singular plural
first person I am going to go we are going to eat
second person you are going to read  you are going to ride
third person he is
she is going to jump
it is
they are going to play
Negatives and questions are formed just like other sentences with be.
Will is like can and should.  It does not change forms in the third person singular:

I will climb and she will watch.
Be careful with negatives!  Explain how the contraction for will not is won’t.
Questions are formed just like questions with can and should.
The differences between these two forms of the future are very subtle.  The main difference is that while going to is sometimes used to refer to something that is planned, will is sometimes used to emphasize that something is not planned.
